AmeriCorps VISTA at HW!

AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program dedicated to fighting poverty through capacity building.  Americorps Vista is administered through the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering.  A VISTA commits one year of service to a non-profit organization to build capacity and help bring individuals out of poverty.  VISTAs have many duties that are not only geared toward direct service, but also to perform any indirect service such as grant writing, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, programming and much more.

The North Mississippi VISTA Project works to fight poverty through capacity building across a 23-county area in North Mississippi. The VISTA project aims to build sustainable systems that connect the University of Mississippi and its resources to low-income communities in this region. Our VISTAs are deployed to non-profit organizations and schools seeking to develop or expand educational programs that serve low-income children and adults.
The North Mississippi VISTA Project (NMVP), based out the University of Mississippi in Oxford, works with local communities in addressing issues associated with poverty and educational inequalities. This program is administered by the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Services (MCVS). Some VISTAs are based at UM, helping to improve educational access and poverty alleviation. Other VISTAs are placed at community agencies that spread throughout the North Mississippi area addressing the same issues. The overall goal of NMVP is to team up with community partners to 1) increase educational resources for low-income children and adults; 2) plan to address clearly identifiable community needs; and 3) connect directly to UM expertise and/or resources.
